“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi for her < strong>struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to protect human rights and freedom for all,” the statement said.
The Nobel Committee noted that Mohammadi was arrested 13 times in Iran. When protests for women's equality erupted in Iran in 2022, “from prison she expressed support for the demonstrators,” said Nobel committee chair Berit Ries-Andersen. She added that the prize awarded to Mohammadi “also recognizes hundreds of thousands of people who spoke out against the Iranian regime.”
