Car traffic on Tbilisi Rustaveli Avenue is blocked.
Demonstrators plan to spend the night near the parliament building, where at 9 a.m. on May 13, 2024, a meeting of the legal committee is scheduled to take place, at which the bill “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” will be discussed in the third reading.
“We are getting ready and staying overnight because by the morning of May 13, the authorities have scheduled committee hearings on the “Russian law” to prepare it for voting in the third reading. Since we will have to stay overnight, we took sleeping bags, small tents, power banks, gas masks, glasses and all the things that will help us stay safe. With our tireless unity in love for the country – let's spend the night together, and in the morning we will not allow the Dream deputies to enter the parliament building and continue to act against the will of the people, the European Union. and the Constitution. Yes to Europe! No to Russian law!” – say the organizers of the rally.
Additional police forces have been mobilized at the legislative building. They closed the parliament gates from the inside with metal barriers. According to the Formula TV company, security forces literally welded the entrances to the building.
Earlier, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia spoke about the expected escalation of the situation in Tbilisi. Vakhtang Gomelauri warned that group blocking of government facilities of special importance is punishable by imprisonment for up to 4 years. The minister said that “there will be no more disproportionately loyal practice in this matter” and anyone who prevents deputies from entering parliament will fall under Article 222 of the Criminal Code.
Note that Georgian Dream plans to adopt the law on “foreign agents” in the third reading at the parliamentary session on May 14. President Zurabishvili previously promised to veto the bill. The authorities said that they could take into account “substantive recommendations” from Western partners within the framework of the veto mechanism.
Recall that it was previously reported that Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili made a statement about protests in the country.
In addition, we previously informed that 8 people were injured as a result of protests in Georgia.
