Alica Schmidt

Alica Schmidt is one of the stars of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. And that although the 22-year-old German did not start once.

Before the games under the sign of the five rings, the 400-meter sprinter was only known to athletics experts. At the Olympics, however, the 22-year-old made headlines around the world. And that even though she hasn't completed a single race.

Schmidt has become the social media star of Tokyo in the last few days, now has 2.3 million followers, increasing her market value and awareness. Something that the athlete would hardly have achieved with a 400-meter triumph.

It all started in 2017 when Schmidt won silver at the Junior World Championships with the German 4×400 meter relay. “I posted a picture of it and some magazines suddenly reported about me,” said the 22-year-old, who was named the “hottest track athlete” by the Australian magazine “Busted Coverage” a little later, the “world”.

“Within a month I had 100,000 followers. It happened incredibly quickly. It was almost frightening for me,” continued the athlete. The follower numbers shot through the roof again. Last week, 200,000 Instagram users of the 22-year-old gave a like. Since February, the number of followers has increased from 1.5 to 2.3 million.

Even if Schmidt did not start in the Olympic Stadium, the trip to the Games was worth it for the Germans. “You will now be able to charge a few thousand euros more for advertising posts than before the games,” said the social media expert Felix Beihartz.
