Olaf Scholz made a statement about the prospects for EU enlargement. According to the German chancellor, Ukraine, Moldova, and in the future Georgia should join the EU.

However, one should not attach too much importance to Shchelets's statement. This Channel 24 opinion was expressed by Vice-Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, international affairs expert Dmitry Sherengovsky.

What lies behind Scholz's breakthrough statement

According to Sherengovsky, Ukraine has already received the status of a candidate for EU membership. And the German chancellor just stated the obvious facts.

Europe is starting to accept the truth about our status. – stressed the political scientist.

He added that the political statement of Shchelets was more focused on the domestic market of Germany.

“These words were directed at the Germans to show that work with Ukraine in this direction continues and such changes should be expected,” Sherengovsky said.

Ukraine's path to EU

On June 23, the European Council granted Ukraine the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union. The Vice-Rector of the UCU recalled that in order to confirm this status, Kyiv must comply with the recommendations of the European Commission on 7 criteria.

Ukraine is expected to receive confirmation of candidate status in the second half of 2023. The next stage is the start of negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU,” Sherengovsky said.

He added that negotiations on the direct inclusion of Ukraine in the European Union could continue for quite a long time.
