Bilbao
After Bilbao was canceled as host of the European Championship at short notice, the organizers receive two finals and an amount of millions as compensation.
Originally, all three Spanish preliminary round matches and a round of 16 in San Mames were planned. However, the organizers could not give a spectator guarantee for the four games.
That is why UEFA decided to withdraw the European Championship games from the Basque metropolis. Instead, Seville was chosen as the venue in consultation with the Spanish Association.
For the games that have been withdrawn, Bilbao will now receive compensation from UEFA, as mayor Juan Mari Aburto announced. Accordingly, the city is to receive 1.3 million euros from the European Football Association. Just like two finals. The Europa League final in 2024 and the Women's Champions League final in 2025 will therefore take place in San Mames.
The compensation payment should therefore cover the expenses of Bilbao in the EM preparatory phase. UEFA has already confirmed payments to the Basque city, but has not given any sums.
