It became known that Nikon intends to stop production of camera bodies in Japan by the end of 2021. The reason is simple – the cameras in smartphones have become too good.
The company's plans were confirmed by official representatives. Nikon also acknowledged that camera sales are dropping due to improvements in smartphone photography capabilities.
Nikon will not stop making cameras completely. She will transfer production from a domestic enterprise to Thailand. The company promises that product quality will be maintained at the same level. In addition, Nikon will continue to manufacture certain camera components and sensors for the healthcare and other industries. In the future, Nikon will close two more factories in Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures.
The media also reported that Nikon had a net loss of $ 314 million in fiscal 2020.
