Christian Estrosi
The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, came to the police after complaints about his words about the Chechen diaspora in the city. This is reported by the nice-matin edition.
Estrosi voluntarily came to the police department on Wednesday, September 9, along with his lawyer Gerard Baudou. The official said that on the evening of June 14, he was warned of clashes involving Chechens. The next morning, he arrived at the scene of the incident to calm down people who were demanding protection.
“On the morning of June 16th, during an interview with BFM, I mentioned this intra-community violence. I clearly said that I could not put up with such facts, whatever the reasons. I have no doubt that I am stigmatizing anyone. I am here to eradicate all forms of violence, ”said Estrosi at the police department. The head of Nice complained that since that time he was persecuted, having received “thousands, even tens of thousands of insults, threats and intimidation.”
In early July, it was reported that Chechens filed more than 50 complaints against Estrosi after claiming they were fighting other communities for a monopoly on the drug market. Thus, he reacted to the situation in Dijon, where there were massive clashes between Chechens and Africans.
The riots in Dijon began after members of the diaspora decided to avenge the alleged brutal beating of a 16-year-old Chechen by local drug dealers. On June 15, more than 150 Chechen natives gathered in the streets of Dijon for revenge, according to local media reports. Many were armed. Then it was noted that 11 people were injured in the clashes.
