The New Zealand government is ending its support for The Lord of the Rings series due to Amazon Studios' decision to move filming to the UK, TASS reports.

The country's economic and regional development minister, Stuart Nash, expressed his disappointment with Amazon Studios' decision. According to him, post-production of the first season of the series will continue in New Zealand until June 2022. At the same time, the second season will be filmed in the UK.

Nash said the memorandum of understanding signed by the New Zealand government and Amazon Studios will no longer be in effect. It was noted that while filming in New Zealand, Amazon Studios received a 25% discount on all production costs.

Earlier it was reported that the studio Amazon revealed the release date of the fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings” based on the novels of John R.R. Tolkien. The first episode of the series, tentatively titled “The Lord of the Rings”, will air on Prime Video on September 2, 2022. The plot of the TV story unfolds several millennia before the events described in The Hobbit. It tells the story of the heroic legends of the Second Age of Middle-earth. Fans of Tolkien's fantasy world will meet in the series with both acquaintances and new heroes who will have to oppose the forces of evil.
