New volcano threatening humanity found in Hawaii
Scientists from the University of Miami said magma is accumulating under the Mauna Loa shield volcano in Hawaii. This could lead to an earthquake and a catastrophic eruption, according to the journal Nature .
The group of experts investigated the movement of the earth's surface, which was measured using satellite geodetic radars and GPS stations. As a result, it turned out that from 2014 to 2020, approximately 0.11 cubic kilometers of magma penetrated into the cavity in the earth's crust, formed after the hot rocks cooled. The formation turned out to be located south of the caldera at a depth of 2.5-3 kilometers.
According to observational data, in 2015, the magma accumulation expanded to the south, where the pressure of the rocks is lower, but already in 2017 the center of deformation returned to its previous position. Previously, no such changes were observed in the magma body beneath Mauna Loa.
In addition, a displacement of the surface under the eastern side of the volcano, located along the horizontal fault, was recorded. No movement was detected on the western side, which indicates the likelihood of an earthquake and subsequent volcanic eruption in the event of a further inflow of magma.
Earlier, due to the consequences caused by the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 13 people were killed.
