New sanctions could have fatal consequences for Russia: what restrictions are the Kremlin panicking about? Angela Figin

The European Union is preparing a new 16th package of sanctions against Russia. It will be aimed at importing aluminum, agricultural products, the “shadow fleet,” liquefied gas and Russian banks.

On air on Channel 24, the executive director of the Penta Center for Applied Political Research, Alexander Leonov, assessed how effective the increased round of sanctions to counter Vladimir Putin could be and what irreversible consequences it would lead to.

What consequences have sanctions against Russia led to

The Kremlin is afraid of new sanctions from the EU and the US, because the Russian economy is already in a state of overstrainand actions that are especially aimed at closing the bottlenecks where Russia has found ways to circumvent sanctions could make it difficult for the aggressor country to finance this war.

In the hope of stopping the inevitable tightening of sanctions, the mouthpiece of the Russian dictator Dmitry Peskov threatened that the introduction of restrictions on Russian aluminum could lead to destabilization of the world market. Although, according to analysts, imports of Russian aluminum to the European Union already amount to only 6%.

Only the American sanctions against Gazprombank led to the collapse of the ruble in Russia. Russia is already exhausting its reserves, Leonov noted.

Russian experts themselves say that the so-called “fund of prosperity and future” has already been exhausted and the Kremlin has to look for money to finance an aggressive war against Ukraine.

US sanctions against the “shadow oil fleet” have already resulted in many Russian ships being stuck in the ocean. According to the executive director of the Penta Center for Applied Political Research, if any of these ships are wrecked, Russia will be forced to pay for environmental damage as well.

Important! Since the introduction of US sanctions on January 10, 65 Russian oil tankers have stopped around the world. In particular, at Chinese ports, near Singapore and the Russian coast in the Baltic Sea and the Far East.

In addition, there are many questions about who will insure this scrap. Even the main buyers of Russian oil – China and India – are already refusing to accept sanctioned ships in their ports.

Which restrictions will be the most painful for Moscow

There remains one more rather important sanction decision against Rosatom, which has not yet been introduced. According to Leonov, if this happens, then Russia will really be in trouble, the consequences could be fatal.

As far as I know, Europe is trying to prepare for such possible scenarios, and the United States is already limiting the purchase of Russian enriched uranium, said the executive director of the Penta Center for Applied Political Research.

Russia occupies more than 50% of the world market for enriched uranium and now the allies are doing everything to find alternatives and this decision has hit the economies of European countries and the United States.
