The American city of New Orleans (Louisiana) was completely without electricity due to Hurricane Ida. This was reported by the CNN TV channel with reference to the energy company Entergy.
According to him, the power outage occurred due to “catastrophic damage” to power lines. Almost 400 thousand inhabitants live in New Orleans.
Louisiana's population exceeds 4.6 million. According to the portal Power Outage, more than 963 thousand people remain without electricity in the state. The portal reports that Entergy serves 1.3 million residents, 800 thousand of whom are now without electricity.
According to the local office of the US National Weather Service, in New Orleans because of the hurricane, a flood threat has been declared. The warning also applies to a number of other localities located in the southeast of the state. It will be valid until at least 22:00 local time (06:00 Moscow time on August 30).
Channel CNN, referring to the leading hydrologist of the Center for the Study of Lower Mississippi and the Gulf (a structural unit of the US Geological Survey) Scott Perrien, reports that because of Hurricane Ida, the Mississippi River changed its direction. “The flow of the river has slowed from about 2 feet per second (about 60 cm / sec. – RBK ) to about half a foot per second (15 cm / sec. – RBK ) in the other direction,” he said.
The Asenshen Ward (County) Sheriff's Office reported the first victim of Hurricane Ida. According to him, the police received a call that a tree fell on the house of one of the local residents under a gust of wind. The police officers who arrived at the scene reported that the unknown had died on the spot.
Formed in the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Ida, which was assigned the fourth category of five possible, hit Louisiana on Sunday afternoon. By the evening, he weakened to the third category, but still threatens with serious damage. The wind speed within the hurricane reaches 53.5 m / s, it moves in the northwest direction at a speed of about 16 km / h.
US President Joe Biden said that the authorities expect serious destruction in the southern states of the country due to the hurricane. “As soon as the storm passes, we will throw all the forces in the country into rescue and recovery work,” he said. The head of state also said that he had contacted the governors of the states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Louisiana and its most populous city, New Orleans, have already been hit by a devastating hurricane. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the state. According to official data, more than 1.8 thousand people died from the disaster. The most significant damage then was done to New Orleans – about 80% of the city's area was under water.
