The new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in his first New Year's address to the Germans spoke about the situation around Ukraine. Excerpts from the text of the appeal, published in advance, are cited by the Tagesspiegel edition.
“The inviolability of borders is a valuable asset and is not subject to discussion,” Scholz said, referring to the situation around Ukraine, which leaders and the media of some countries accuse Russia of intending to invade.
Scholz also spoke in favor of a “sovereign, united, strong Europe”, noting the need for transatlantic cooperation to ensure security in the region.
Olaf Scholz was elected Chancellor of Germany at a meeting of the Bundestag in early December. Thus, he replaced Angela Merkel, who headed the federal government since 2005, in this post. Scholz was a candidate for chancellor from the winning parliamentary elections, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).
