Electron-Positron Collider in Novosibirsk

Moscow. August 27. INTERFAX.RU – The project of the electron-positron collider “Super charm-tau factory” of the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (Novosibirsk) is planned to be implemented in Sarov (Nizhny Novgorod Region) within the framework of the project of the National Center for Physics and Mathematics (NCFM), initiated by the State Corporation Rosatom “, according to the press service of the INP.

At the Tekhnoprom-2021 forum, this was reported by Vasily Neznamov, First Deputy Scientific Director of the All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF, part of Rosatom), and Nikolai Zavyalov, Director of the Institute of Nuclear and Radiation Physics of RFNC-VNIIEF.

“This is a development of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the SB RAS. I believe that only the creation of a megascience facility with the participation of domestic scientists and scientists from abroad will create a good scientific atmosphere, which will have a positive effect on the applied work of our nuclear center,” the words are quoted in the message Neznamova.

Zavyalov noted that the “Super charm-tau factory” will make it possible to carry out fundamental and applied research in the Rosatom system.

“Today we are at the stage when it is necessary to revive the organization of fundamental research in the system of the State Atomic Energy Corporation” Rosatom “in cooperation with the leading scientific enterprises of the Russian Academy of Sciences and industry. This is one of the main directions that were considered when creating the National Center for Physics and Mathematics,” he stressed.

Zavyalov noted that the project is international. “Practice shows that leading experts from all over the world take part in any breakthrough project. We hope that the implementation of the Super charm-tau factory project will lead to Russia's presence in the top of the world's leading countries,” he said.

The Russian project “Super charm-tau factory” is in the final stage of development, the press service of the INP reported earlier.

Currently, there are two projects of electron-positron colliders. One of them is developing in China (Hefei), the second in Russia (Novosibirsk). The main purpose of experiments on these megascience devices is the study of particles containing charmed quarks, the study of tau leptons and the search for new physical effects that are not described by the Standard Model.

Earlier, INP scientists changed the design of the new electron-positron collider in such a way that its cost can be reduced by 1.5-2 times: the updated design of the facility provides for a decrease in its perimeter from 800 to 470 m, a number of expensive solutions are excluded without compromising the measurement accuracy. in this case, the maximum energy in the beam increased from 2.5 GeV to 3 GeV (GeV), which will lead to a larger volume of experimental data.

The project is currently funded in part by grants that the institute is winning. The total cost of the initial project is about 40 billion rubles. INP has already invested about $ 40 million from the institute's extra-budgetary funds into the project, part of the infrastructure necessary for the collider has been built. Projects of buildings and structures to be built have been prepared at the expense of the federal budget.

The luminosity, that is, the number of collisions of elementary particles observed per second, in the collider under construction should be about 1,000 times greater than what has been achieved so far at the institute, and even more than that of the Large Hadron Collider. If the accelerator is launched, experiments that now require several years can be carried out within a few weeks. This increases the likelihood of detecting rare or not envisaged by the modern theory of processes and facilitating the search for a new form of matter.
