New drug for Alzheimer's disease approved in the USA

Moscow. June 8. INTERFAX.RU – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the drug Aduhelm for Alzheimer's disease from Biogen. This is reported by Axios.

The cost of medication treatment will be $ 56,000 per year. Aduhelm became the first approved drug for Alzheimer's disease in 18 years. At the same time, it is noted that so far there is no evidence of preventing the slowdown of memory impairment and brain function with the help of a new drug.

Aduhelm is an intravenous medication that should only be administered by a doctor. The FDA also warns that side effects of the drug may include cerebral edema and bleeding.

The agency approved the drug under an accelerated procedure, which means that Biogen will have to conduct additional trials of the drug's benefits. At the same time, the medicine will be banned if its effectiveness is not proven, but before that Aduhelm will be on sale.

The FDA notes that it used an evidence-based approach when approving the drug, although scientists and doctors in the United States disagree with this decision.
