The California Senate is considering a bill that would allow people to choose natural organic decomposition, which is essentially composting bodies.
This idea fits well with environmental trends. Currently, the only legal way to dispose of a body in California is through burial or cremation. For those who want their body to have less impact on the environment, composting may be the way to go. “Some people like the idea of being part of the forest after death,” says one of the project's authors.
If the bill is approved, everything will go like this: the human body will be sprinkled with wood shavings, alfalfa and straw, and then placed in a spacious metal chamber. In about a month, a person's body – even their bones – will have turned into almost one cubic meter of nutrient-rich soil. This is a much more environmentally friendly way of getting rid of the body.
