Nephew stole bones of dead uncle and blackmailed family: what did he demand

He puzzled by the motive.

A man in Vietnam committed a shocking act, stealing the skull and bones of his uncle from the grave.

This is reported by SCMP.

He tried to demand 5 billion Vietnamese dong (US$203,000) from the deceased's family to pay off his gambling debts.

On September 9, 37-year-old Luu Thanh Nam from Thanh Hoa province used a shovel to dig a 20-centimeter hole in his uncle's grave. He pulled out some of the remains and hid them in a nearby pile of rubbish.

The deceased was the father of Nam's cousin, Luu Thanh Khoi, and had died four years earlier.

The next day, Nam sent Khoi's wife a threatening text message from an anonymous phone number, demanding payment to return the bones and warning that if they went to the police, they would never be able to get the remains back.

Alarmed by the messages, the family checked the grave and discovered a hole in the coffin lid. They immediately reported it to the police.

After an investigation, the perpetrator was identified and confessed to the crime, citing huge gambling debts as his motive.

The police recovered the stolen bones and returned them to the Hoi family.

In Vietnamese tradition, digging up a grave is considered extremely disrespectful, as it is believed to cause unrest in the soul of the deceased, which can affect the living.

In response to the incident, Hoi reburied his father's remains according to local customs, hoping to restore peace to his soul.

On September 12, Nam was arrested for desecrating graves and extortion, specific punishments have not yet been disclosed.

In Vietnam, the punishment for desecrating graves can be up to seven years in prison, and those convicted of extortion can face up to 20 years in prison, depending on the amount.

Recall that earlier in the US, a man buried his wife alive. She was underground for 12 hours and survived.
