Neos idea: Christmas vouchers up to 500 euros free of income tax

Retail, catering and the hotel industry should benefit – food retailers issue the vouchers.

Since there are no Christmas parties this year – due to Corona – the Neos advocate increasing the wage tax-relevant limit for vouchers.

To date, gifts that are received at company events (Christmas parties, etc.) do not have to be included in wage tax up to a value of 186 euros / year.

The same applies to participation in company events such as Christmas parties. Up to 365 euros / year are exempt from income tax.

The idea of the Neos is to increase the limit once for 2020 to 500 euros. The 500 euro voucher should be tax deductible for the entrepreneur and tax-free for the employees.

Grocery trade as a voucher issuer

The voucher is to be issued in grocery stores – redeemed in special industries. “Gastronomy, the hotel industry and other companies have had a difficult year”, says Neos economics spokesman Sepp Schellhorn. “We could provide an incentive to use these industries more intensively. With the measure, companies would also have the additional opportunity to show their employees the necessary appreciation for the hard work in the crisis year 2020. “

Only recently, the Wirtschaftsbund advocated converting the wage tax-free limit of 365 euros per year into vouchers for regional trade instead of the discontinued Christmas parties.
