The NATO press service on its Twitter page announced an extraordinary meeting of the alliance's foreign ministers regarding the units of the Russian army stationed on the border with Ukraine.
“NATO foreign ministers will discuss Russia's military build-up in and around Ukraine, as well as broader issues of European security,” the statement said. It also became known that the meeting of the foreign ministers will be chaired by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Earlier, the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina urged not to rely on the help of the West in the aggravation of the military situation. According to her, other countries will not send their soldiers to fight in the event of Russian aggression. However, Ukrainian soldiers “have stood and will continue to stand on the front lines.”
On January 4, NATO confirmed the holding of talks with Russia, which will take place on January 12. The talks will take place within the Russia-NATO Council chaired by Secretary General Stoltenberg. In addition, on December 31, 2021, NATO announced its readiness for a constructive dialogue with Russia on the Ukrainian issue.
On December 30, the head of the US State Department, Anthony Blinken, discussed the containment of Russia's “aggression” against Ukraine with the Foreign Ministers of Great Britain, Germany and France – Elizabeth Truss, Annalena Berbock and Jean-Yves Le Drian. During the conversation, the allies confirmed their readiness to charge Russia a high price if the plans attributed to it were realized.
