Alliance members condemn Russia's decision to withdraw from the Treaty and its aggressive war against Ukraine, which contradicts the goals of the agreement.

NATO member states condemned Russia's decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). As a result, the CFE States Parties intend to suspend the Treaty “for as long as necessary.”

This is stated in the statement of the North Atlantic Council on the Alliance’s reaction to the Russian Federation’s withdrawal from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.

“Members of the Alliance condemn Russia's decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) and its aggressive war against Ukraine, which contradicts the goals of the Treaty. Russia's withdrawal from the CFE is the latest in a series of actions that systematically undermine Euro-Atlantic security,” the statement said.

It notes that Russia “continues to demonstrate disrespect for arms control, including the core principles of reciprocity, transparency, compliance, verification and host country consent, and undermines the rules-based international order.”

“Recognizing the role of the CFE Treaty as the cornerstone of the Euro-Atlantic security architecture, a situation in which the member states of the Alliance adhere to the Treaty, but Russia does not, would be unstable. Therefore, as a consequence, the CFE States parties intend to suspend the CFE Treaty for as long as possible necessary in accordance with their rights under international law. This decision is fully supported by all NATO members,” the North Atlantic Council said.

Alliance members emphasize that “all are united in their commitment to effective conventional arms control as a key element of Euro-Atlantic security, taking into account the prevailing environment and the security of all members of the Alliance.”

“This is complementary to the Alliance's deterrence and defense capabilities, which Alliance members have decided to continue to strengthen. Alliance members will continue to consult and assess the implications of the current security environment and its impact on Alliance security and on our approach. Alliance members will use NATO as a platform for enhanced discussions and close consultations regarding arms control efforts,” the statement concluded.

Let us recall that on Tuesday, November 7, the aggressor country of the Russian Federation finally withdrew from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe . It should be noted that Moscow announced the termination of this document back in 2007.
