NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference following an emergency summit of the organization in an online format said that the alliance had taken measures to strengthen the eastern flank. According to him, thousands of military personnel, more than a hundred aircraft, as well as about 120 ships were deployed, TASS reports.
“The United States, Canada and European allies have placed additional thousands of troops in the eastern part of the alliance. We have over 100 aircraft in high readiness deployed in 30 different locations. We also have 120 ships from the north to the Mediterranean, including three aircraft carrier strike groups,” the alliance's secretary general said.
He stressed that the NATO response force is on high alert, and the bulk of them are US soldiers with significant French and German contingents.
Earlier, Stoltenberg noted that the alliance and the EU countries are ready to continue their sanctions policy against Russia, introducing new restrictions, even to their own detriment, if necessary.
