NATO Secretary General Assesses Reality of Threat from Russia

The aggressor state is building up its armed forces at a rate that will allow it to attack the Alliance in 3-7 years.

Mark Rutte

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte believes that it would be naive to underestimate the threat posed to the Alliance's member states by the Russian Federation, which is waging an unprovoked war in Ukraine.

His statement at the NATO summit is quoted by The Guardian.

“Let's not be naive about Russia,” Rutte said.

The NATO Secretary General recalled information from many high-ranking military leaders in Europe, including the Chief of the General Staff of Germany, which indicates that the Russian armed forces are being built up and restructured “at such a pace that they could be ready to attack NATO in three, five or seven years.”

“We know there is a threat from Russia, short term, long term, whatever, but there is a threat from Russia, and we have to make sure that we can protect ourselves, and that's why we're doing this,” he said.

Recall that the Hungarian Prime Minister expressed doubt at the NATO summit that Russia poses a real threat to NATO
