Currently, the air defense base in Poland is configured only to intercept air targets from the Middle East, but Warsaw wants to discuss expanding the anti-missile shield with its allies.
The United States has officially commissioned an air defense military base in northern Poland. According to President Andrzej Duda, this is a guarantee of Poland's security as a NATO member, despite the bloody war unleashed by Russia in neighboring Ukraine.
This is reported by the Voice of America.
During the ceremonial opening of a military base in the town of Redzikowo on the Baltic Sea coast, which took place on Wednesday, November 13, Duda said that Poland's military alliance with Washington remains strong, regardless of who leads the United States. The Polish president also stressed that he has warm ties with the next US president, Donald Trump.
The Kremlin responded to the opening of a NATO base in Poland, calling it “an attempt to contain Russia” by moving American military infrastructure closer to its borders.
The air defense base in Redzikowo is part of the NATO missile defense shield called “Aegis Ashore”. According to official information, the shield is capable of intercepting short- and medium-range ballistic missiles and is purely defensive in nature.
The shield includes several key facilities:
Currently, the air defense systems in Redzikowo can only be used against air targets launched from the Middle East. In order to intercept missiles launched from Russia, it is necessary to change the radar settings, which is a very complex procedure. Therefore, Warsaw intends to discuss with its allies the need to expand the scale of NATO's missile shield.
Recall that last month, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced the opening of a NATO air defense base in northern Poland. The construction lasted eight years and was accompanied by several scandals, and the opening took place six years later than planned.
