NATO Baltic Air Patrol mission fighters flew twice over the past week and January 2 and escorted four Russian military aircraft
This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Lithuania.
According to the information, the fighters performing the functions of the NATO air police in the Baltic countries took to the air to detect and escort aircraft that violated the rules of flight in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
So, on December 27, Alliance forces discovered and escorted a Russian Il-20 aircraft en route from the main part of Russia to the Kaliningrad region. Also, two Russian Su-27 aircraft , which took off from the Kaliningrad region and returned back, were recorded and escorted.
The next day, 28 December, two Russian Su-30 aircraft were identified and escorted. Both aircraft flew through international airspace from the main part of Russia to the Kaliningrad region.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense also clarified that on December 27, Russian Su-27s flew with transponders turned off, without flight plans and without communication with the controllers of the Regional Mission Control Center. In other cases, the aircraft flew with transponders turned off, without flight plans, but maintained radio contact with the center's controllers.
