NATO begins its largest exercise in decades, involving 90,000 troops

According to NATO's new defense plans, its main opponents are Russia and terrorist organizations.

From January 22, NATO will begin its largest military exercises over the past decades, in which about 90 thousand military personnel will take part. The objective of the training is to demonstrate that the Alliance can defend its entire territory up to the Russian border.

This is reported by Reuters with reference to messages from officers.

Months before Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops into Ukraine in February 2022, NATO is bolstering security on its eastern flank with Russia and Ukraine.

“This is the largest expansion of the Alliance since the Cold War. The war games are aimed at keeping Russia from attacking a member country,” the source says.

The exercise, called Steadfast Defender 24, “will show that NATO can conduct and support complex operations in many areas over several months over thousands of kilometers (miles) from the High North to Central and Eastern Europe and under any conditions.”

Where exactly will NATO exercises continue

The troops will move to Europe and beyond until the end of May. According to the command, this will create a so-called “simulated scenario of an evolving conflict with an almost equal enemy.” According to new NATO defense plans, its main opponents are Russia and terrorist organizations.

“The alliance will demonstrate its ability to strengthen the Euro-Atlantic space through the transatlantic movement of forces from North America,” US Supreme Allied Commander Christopher Cavoli told reporters.

The head of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, said that this is “a record number of troops that we can attract and train on this scale across the entire Alliance, across the ocean from the United States to Europe.”

Bauer called it a “big change” from the number of troops that were training just a year ago. Sweden, which is due to join NATO this year, will also attend.

Previously, the media said that NATO’s opponent in the exercises will be the fictional state Occasus, similar to Russia and, according to the scenario, will attack one of the members Alliance, which will provoke the Third World War. During the exercises, it is planned to conduct at least 500 air combat operations.
