NATO Deputy Secretary General Joane said there was no consensus on Ukraine’s membership in the alliance

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joane said that Ukraine’s entry into the alliance in the near future is impossible. He stated this to the France24 TV channel.
“No one is saying that Ukraine will join NATO in the near future. Ukraine needs to reform a lot inside the country,” Joane said.
He also stated that for Ukraine’s membership in NATO, there must be a consensus in the alliance, which is currently absent. Joane added that NATO supports Kiev, but is not going to take part in military operations in the country.
Earlier, Joane commented on the alliance’s position on the issue of military assistance to Ukraine. He stated that there is no split in NATO on the issue of assistance to Ukraine, since the alliance “does not provide direct military support to Ukraine.” He noted that the decision of some NATO members to send weapons to Ukraine should not divide the partners. Joane also said that NATO will send a team of cybersecurity specialists to Ukraine.
