NATO ambassadors approved the candidacy of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands to lead the Alliance.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was on June 26 officially appointed to the post of NATO Secretary General.
This was reported on the official NATO website.
“On Wednesday 26 June 2024, the North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg. Rutte will take up his duties as Secretary General on 1 October 2024. when Stoltenberg’s term expires after ten years at the head of the Alliance,” the message says.
How will this affect Ukraine
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Netherlands has transferred weapons worth four billion euros to Ukraine. Under Rutte's leadership, a country the size of the Odessa region became one of our five largest donors. But we are unlikely to see a sharp change in NATO policy towards Ukraine.
“NATO troops should not enter Ukraine, because this will lead to direct confrontation with Russia and World War III,” said Mark Rutte.
Rutte was offered the position of Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance at least twice – both times the initiative came from overseas. The United States was one of the first to approve the candidacy of the Dutch Prime Minister and now.
Jens Stoltenberg's powers expire in October – just weeks before the US elections and the possible return of Trump. The Alliance is obviously counting on Rutte's diplomatic talents – Trump has repeatedly stated that the United States spends too much on defense, and even threatened to leave NATO.
