The Alliance statement does not specify whether Russia's failure to comply with the treaty could lead to its denunciation with by the United States.

NATO calls on Russia to fulfill its obligations under the Strategic Arms Reduction and Limitation Treaty (START).

This is stated in a statement released on Friday, February 3.

“NATO Allies continue to view effective arms control as an essential contribution to our security goals,” the Alliance said in a statement, which did not specify whether Russia's failure to comply with the treaty could lead to its denunciation by the United States or lead to another reaction.

The release notes that Washington respects this treaty as the only major arms control convention that remains in force between the US and Russia.

The New START treaty, which is being extended until 2026 by US and Russian Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin agreed two years ago, limiting the nuclear arsenals of both countries to 800 launchers and 1,550 warheads for each side.

The communiqué also says that Russia is preventing the United States from conducting inspections under the treaty, starting from August 2022.

“We note with concern that Russia has not fulfilled its legal obligations, including with regard to inspections, and we urge it to fulfill its obligations under the Treaty,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg commented on this statement on Twitter.

Moscow previously stated that Russian specialists can no longer conduct checks in the United States due to sanctions imposed against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

Recall that earlier the US State Department said that Russia violated the treaty on the reduction of long-range nuclear weapons with its refusal in Washington to admit object inspections.
