The seaman who was killed during the seizure of a ship by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea was a native of Azerbaijan. This was reported in the Telegram channel Sputnik Azerbaijan.
According to the newspaper, the criminals killed the mechanic Farman Ismailov. The pirates also took 15 crew members hostage. There are wounded among them. It is noted that all the remaining sailors are Turkish citizens. Media reports that the seizure of the Turkish freighter Mozart, which flew the flag of Liberia, took place off the coast of Nigeria.
Earlier it was reported that pirates kidnapped a Russian in the Gulf of Guinea. According to a statement by Russian diplomats, a pirate attack was carried out on the AGISILAOS ship on the night of November 29-30, as a result of which the attackers kidnapped four crew members, including a Russian citizen.
The Gulf of Guinea region is considered dangerous for sailors – pirates often attack ships of different countries there. For example, in September 2020, pirates attacked the Water Phoenix vessel, which was sailing under the flag of Liberia. They kidnapped the captain and one of the crew members, both Russian citizens. There were seven Russians and 11 Filipinos on board. At the time of the attack, the ship was located near Lagos. In the summer in the same area, pirates attacked the Curacao Trader tanker and took 15 people hostage.
Piracy in the Gulf of Guinea developed in the first decade of the century. Representatives of this structure are mainly well-armed gangs specializing in the theft of oil products. Sea pirates have become a serious threat to the global oil market. The Gulf of Guinea, a key hub for oil production by eight West African exporting countries, has so far accounted for more than 20 pirate attacks and 90 percent of all kidnappings on the high seas.
