The National Geographic Mapping Policy Committee has recognized waters around Antarctica up to 60 degrees south latitude, with the exception of the Drake Passage and the Scotia Sea, as the Southern Ocean.
“In a way, it's just geographic boring. The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by scientists, but since there was no such agreement at the international level, we did not officially recognize it, ”explained Alex Tate, a spokesman for National Geographic.
In recent decades, the term “Southern Ocean” has become increasingly common in scientific articles and research, which influenced National Geographic's decision.
The existence of the fifth ocean is recognized by many world organizations. The waters in this region are absolutely unique, and a separate name can draw public attention to the special problems and environmental needs of a particular area.
