According to Verge, citing a group of scientists overseeing the work of the Perseverance rover, on August 5, the machine was unable to take samples of Martian soil for a sample. But now a second attempt is being planned.
Reportedly, the first attempt at collecting soil failed not due to a malfunction of the rover, but due to the flowability of the soil in the selected location, which was a complete surprise to scientists. According to Louise Jandour, chief sampling engineer for the Perseverance rover, at first it was not clear what happened. The necessary core tube was selected for the work, the process was monitored by specialists and did not cause any complaints. However, the rover did not extract the core from the well into the prepared sampler. From the cameras on the Perseverance, the rock looked solid but was free-flowing. It was decided to move the rover to another drilling area under the promising name Citadel.
According to the source, a second attempt will be made to take samples within a month. A total of 35 samples of Martian soil need to be collected, which is the first stage of a trilateral project to return these samples to Earth around the 2030s. These will be the first samples ever delivered from the Red Planet to Earth.
