Space agency NASA said that its Perseverance rover was still able to extract oxygen from the atmosphere of Mars for the first time in history. This has become a reality thanks to the Mars Oxygen In-situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE).
In total, it took the device about 1 hour to obtain 5 g of oxygen. As the agency writes on its website, this volume is enough for 1 person to breathe for 10 minutes. At the same time, it should be understood that all this is just the beginning – very soon MOXIE will be able to produce 10 g of oxygen in 1 hour.
Recall that the Perseverance rover itself landed on the red planet on February 18, 2021. According to experts, this is not only the largest, but also the most technically complex rover of all, built by mankind.
