NASA calculated how long it takes for humanity to shoot down an asteroid flying to Earth. To do this, experts simulated a situation in which a threatening asteroid is located at a distance of more than 56 million km from the Earth.
According to the idea, this celestial body was supposed to crash into the Earth six months after its discovery. Experts decided to find out if humanity has enough advanced technology to prevent this catastrophe. The conclusions are not comforting.
As it turned out, earthlings have no chance to stop the fall of the asteroid in six months. For this, as it turned out, humanity needs not months, but years. According to NASA estimates, it takes five to ten years in order to share a celestial body threatening the Earth with subsequent measures to send it in the opposite direction. Some scholars even believe that 10 years is the minimum period for this case.
