On July 3, SpaceX will launch Falcon 9 into orbit. The launch vehicle will deliver valuable cargo for scientific research to the ISS.
It is reported that the “package” will include 5 thousand tardigrades (water bears) and 128 cubs of bobtail squids, which glow in the dark. The main goal of the mission is to study how tardigrades cope with stressful environments in space.
The scientists also want to find out if the absence of gravity has any effect on the symbiotic relationship between squid and the beneficial microbes Vibrio fischeri. With the help of the data obtained, the specialists hope to improve the conditions for staying people on the ISS.
It is worth noting that tardigrades are generally known for their ability to survive in extreme conditions. So, recently a group of scientists proved that tardigrades can cope with ultra-high pressure and deformation. To do this, they shot them from a pistol.
