A distant relative of the French emperor found himself on the same electoral list with opponents of the European Union and NATO.
Frenchman Joachim Murat, a distant relative and a descendant of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, will run in elections to the European Parliament on a list headed by the controversial politician Georges Kuzmanovic, known for his anti-Ukrainian position and pro-Kremlin narratives.
This was reported by Le Figaro with reference to a published press release.
Joachim Murat appears number three on the “We the People” list. Topping the list is Georges Kuzmanovic, former spokesman for the far-left La France Insoumise (“Unconquered France”) party, which he left in 2018 to found the Republique Souveraine (“Sovereign Republic”) movement.
Georges Kuzmanovich is known for justifying Russia's intervention in the war in Syria and presenting Putin's annexation of Crimea as “an act of self-defense in the face of a putsch instigated by neo-Nazis from the Maidan.”
< p>According to Murat, the list will also include Philippe Gregoire, president of the SAMU Social Agricole association, which defends farmers in difficulty, and the French writer Olivier Delorme.
50-year-old Joachim Murat presents himself as a descendant of Marshal of the Empire and King of Naples Joachim Murat (1767-1815), who was Napoleon I's brother-in-law through his marriage to his sister Caroline Bonaparte.
Former paratrooper Joachim Murat calls himself “a passionate admirer of France and its social model, which can no longer tolerate its planned destruction by supporters of a federalist Europe.”
Like his political associates, the descendant of Napoleon opposes such supernational entities as the European Union and NATO.
Recall that elections to the European Parliament will be held on June 6-9, 2024. Elections in the 27 EU member states, involving more than 400 million European voters, will determine the composition of the 720-seat assembly for the next five years. Anti-European populists expect big victories in these elections.
