Global Times: US uses situation around Ukraine to rally NATO countries

The United States, pumping up the rhetoric about Russia's “invasion” of Ukraine, is trying to rally NATO members and intensify the confrontation between Moscow and the European Union. This conclusion was reached at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, writes Global Times.
As NATO's European members have been drifting further and further away from the United States of late, Washington is seeking to take advantage of the difficult situation in Ukraine to separate Russia from Europe, strengthen NATO cohesion, and strengthen control over the alliance.
Another goal was the desire to prevent the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, fearing the formation of an economic partnership between Russia and Germany.
Earlier, US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield accused Russia of invading Europe. “This is how the Russians operate. They stationed these troops on the frontier. We saw how they did it when they invaded other parts of Eastern Europe,” she said. At the same time, the diplomat refused to explain what episodes in world history she had in mind.
On February 17, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin called statements about Russia's “invasion” of Ukraine hysteria. According to him, Moscow hopes that the West will change its behavior. “Now we are looking at our partners in Western countries, capitals and expect them to bring down the wave of this hysteria about Russia’s intentions in the region,” he said.
