European cities must urgently reduce their carbon footprint from transport to meet their climate goals, which include a transition to green transportation by 2030. This is stated in a study by CleanCities.

Of the 36 European cities analyzed, none are close enough to achieving carbon neutrality in the transport sector by the target date. When compiling the rating, the company took into account factors such as road safety for pedestrians, access to environmentally friendly transport and air quality. Oslo has been the most successful in combating transport emissions, followed by Amsterdam and Helsinki.

The researchers named Naples and Krakow as the dirtiest in terms of transport emissions, with the Polish city ranked low in part due to problems with traffic jams. The financial centers of Paris and London were in 5th and 12th places, respectively. “This should be a wake-up call for the city authorities. Even the best cities are not on the right track,” said CleanCities Campaign Director Barbara Stoll.

According to the European Commission, urban areas account for more than a fifth of all transport emissions in the European Union. The EU needs to prioritize reducing emissions from this sector in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

In November 2021, analysts named the city with the dirtiest air. They became the capital of Kyrgyzstan Bishkek. The concentration of fine PM2.5 particles in the air of Bishkek on November 8 was 294 micrograms per cubic meter, which is ten times higher than the norm.
