Scientist Kashin called the situation in the east of Ukraine a win-win situation for China

Russia's actions related to tough diplomacy and the promotion of its conditions in the conflict situation in eastern Ukraine will have a positive effect on China. Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (CCMEI NRU HSE) Vasily Kashin, in a conversation with Lenta.ru, called the advantages of China from the confrontation between Russia and the West.
According to the scientist, the current situation between Kiev and Moscow is generally win-win for Beijing, regardless of the outcome of negotiations on security guarantees with the United States and NATO. “If Russia does not achieve satisfaction of its demands for security guarantees, then Europe turns into a hotbed of permanent military tension, to which significant US military forces are chained. This goes against the strategy of Washington, which is trying to concentrate its resources on the Pacific Ocean, ”the expert said.
On the other hand, Kashin noted, the West's satisfaction of Russia's demands for security guarantees creates a “powerful precedent” for China to use in its policy in Asia. “That is, if Russia succeeded, then China, which has there [in Asia] much more leverage on the situation, all the more can“ smile with happiness ”and it can demand something,” the scientist concluded.
Earlier, China supported Russia's proposals on security guarantees in Europe. This was stated in a joint statement following the meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
According to the statement, China and Russia oppose the further expansion of NATO and call on the organization to abandon the ideological approaches of the Cold War. The parties also call on the North Atlantic Alliance to respect the sovereignty, security and interests of other countries.
