Named countries that could disappear due to global warming
Climate change could lead to the extinction of a number of countries, scientists warned. We are talking, first of all, about the island states of the Pacific Ocean, according to The Guardian.
Recently, UN experts published a report where they said that the world is heating up much faster than previous estimates. Rising temperatures lead to rising sea levels. The islands have already begun to experience the consequences of these processes, and in the future the situation may worsen.
According to the study, the average temperature on the planet may soon rise by 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, while sea level will rise by half a meter. An increase of 2 degrees threatens to grow by three meters.
Every additional 0.5 degrees of global warming increases the intensity and frequency of heat waves, heavy rainfall, droughts and extreme weather events. If earlier destructive natural disasters occurred once every 50-100 years, now – once a decade.
The Pacific region produces very few hazardous emissions: only 0.23% of the total. But he was one of the first to face the consequences of global warming.
“Rising sea levels mean that much of places like Kiribati, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands will simply become uninhabitable,” said Nicola Cazule, head of research at Greenpeace Australia Pacific.
Another region suffering from the effects of warming is the Arctic. She is gradually losing sea ice.
