The American telecom operator recommended that its customers turn off 5G on smartphones in order to save power. This is reported by The Verge.
The journalists drew attention to the publication of one of the largest US providers Verizon on Twitter. A customer support officer named a way to improve the autonomy of a 5G device by shutting down the fifth-generation connection. “One way to extend the battery life is to turn on LTE,” the message said.
The authors noted that Verizon representatives did not actually urge subscribers to abandon 5G, but they very carefully hinted at this. After some time, the tweet posted on February 28 was deleted.
Some Verizon subscribers reacted negatively to the operator's advice, calling this method a half-measure that does not solve the problem. Also, some users thought it absurd to buy a new and expensive phone with support for fifth generation networks, and then turn off 5G on it.
In a conversation with subscribers, Verizon representatives noted that at the moment one of the company's priorities is to expand the coverage area with support for the ultra-fast mmWave range. The journalists noted that a full-fledged transition to 5G in the future will allow customers of American operators to abandon LTE.
Journalists who studied the new Apple smartphones noted that the devices have a very limited life in terms of data transmission via 5G. In particular, problems with the iPhone 12 arise when using the millimeter wave (mmWave), which has an increased data transfer rate.
