Norway could become a battleground in the event of a war between Russia and the United States. This is the conclusion reached by a lecturer at the Norwegian Armed Forces Academy, Lieutenant Colonel Turmud Heyer, reports NRK.
According to him, the Americans are increasingly “mastering the Norwegian soil.” In particular, he pointed out, this is indicated by the upcoming deployment of American strategic bombers B-1B Lancer at Erland.
Heyer believes that the main vector of Western policy should be focused not on containing Moscow, but on some measures to calm the situation. “It is in Norway's interests to somehow balance the US in the west and Russia in the east,” he said, since an open armed conflict between the superpowers would be a catastrophic event for Oslo.
In January 2019, Norwegian Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen said that Russia is in open confrontation with Western states, and this directly affects the security of Norway and its allies. According to the minister, Russia seeks to undermine the unity of the West and international cooperation and uses its military and economic forces, neglecting diplomacy. “In general, the development of events in our environment shows that we must take into account that an armed conflict between states in Europe is no longer inconceivable,” he stressed.
Bakke-Jensen then added that the consequences of the collision could be very serious for the High North.
