In 2017, 11 geologists from New Zealand said they had found a new submerged continent – this is Zealand. Scientists have recently received new confirmation of their hypothesis.
At first, the researchers debated whether Zeeland could be called a continent. It meets many criteria for this kind of object: it has well-defined boundaries, covers an area of more than a million square kilometers, rises above the surrounding oceanic crust, and has a thicker continental crust than the oceanic one. However, Zeeland did not meet one criterion – age. The oldest samples were estimated to be 500 million years old. Other continents are at least twice as old as Zealand.
A new study found these estimates were wrong. The part of the submerged continent, the origin of which is shrouded in mystery, is still twice as old as geologists previously assumed. As one New Zealand researcher noted, he no longer has any doubts that he lives on a separate continent.
It is worth noting that most (approximately 94%) of the hypothetical continent is located under the waters of the Pacific Ocean.
