SpaceX founder Elon Musk believes the Raptor's liquid propellant rocket engine has made relatively small improvements to “what the Russians have already done.” The Raptor is planned to be used on the Starship manned spacecraft.
“I spend a lot of time studying the design of Russian rocket engines. There are great Russian engines, ”Musk said in an interview with the Everyday Astronaut. “Our engine is more pressurized than before, and it has full gasification of the combustion components. But these are relatively small improvements in relation to what the Russians have already done, ”the entrepreneur added.
Elon Musk noted that he wants to dispel the misconception that the most difficult thing in creating a rocket is its design. In his opinion, the most difficult thing is to make the Raptor cost less than $ 1,000 per ton of thrust.
