Movement – life: deterioration of motor functions associated with impending death

Deterioration of motor functions in people over 65 may indicate impending death. A group of scientists from France and Great Britain found this out in the course of the study, reports the scientific journal The BMJ .

This research began at the end of the 20th century. Scientists have studied the long-term effects of social, behavioral and biological factors on health. In total, six thousand people took part in the experiment, whose age ranged from 35 to 55 years.

Participants in the study were assessed for nine years of walking speed, time to get up from a chair, and other indicators of daily activities. It was found that it was the weakening motor function that correlated with the increased risk of mortality. It was the difficulties in performing everyday tasks that indicated the approach of death in 30% of cases, and a decrease in walking speed – in 22% of cases.

In addition, the volunteers also began to deteriorate in the time to get up from the chair 10 years before death. Self-assessment of motor function has worsened in seven years, and difficulties in everyday life – in four years.

Scientists plan to continue conducting such studies to assess the physical activity of subjects. According to doctors, identifying problems with such functions will help take timely measures to correct the situation.

Earlier, the doctor Karan Raj from the UK called a way to effectively solve sleep problems. Those who suffer from insomnia should use the 10-3-2-1 formula.
