Refugees in France (archive photo, 2020)
Germany leads among other EU countries in the number of asylum applications. This is reported by the newspaper Die Welt on Saturday, April 24. The publication refers to unpublished data from the European Asylum Support Office (EASO). In the first three months of 2021, 26,400 new applications were filed in Germany. In second place in terms of polarity among refugees is France (20,477), in third – Spain (13,034). Least of all applications were filed in Estonia (11) and Hungary (8).
Most of the applicants came from Syria (41 percent), followed by refugees from Afghanistan (14 percent) and Iraq (7 percent).
In total, 102,674 asylum requests were submitted to the migration authorities of the EU countries, as well as Switzerland and Norway in the first quarter. This is almost a third less than in the same period in 2020. The decrease in the number of statements is associated with the pandemic. Greece remains the main destination for refugees in the EU, followed by Italy and Bulgaria.
