Moscow doctors removed a man's brain tumor the size of a chicken egg

Doctors of the Moscow City Clinical Hospital named after V.V. Veresaev performed a complex operation to remove a large tumor in the cerebellum. The surgeons saved the man from problems with coordination of movements and the likelihood of death in the future, the press service of the Moscow Department of Health said.

A 53-year-old resident of the capital turned to doctors for help with complaints of dizziness, nausea and unsteadiness when walking. According to the results of the MRI of the brain, hemangioblastoma the size of a chicken egg was found in the right hemisphere of the cerebellum. This type of tumor is observed in about 2% of cases of intracranial formations.

Tumor pressure caused impaired coordination of movements and decreased muscle tone in the patient. In its advanced stages, the disease can cause mental health problems.

“Symptoms usually appear when the tumor is already compressing the cerebellum and brainstem. And the larger it is, the higher the risk of cerebral edema and death. The only radical way to treat such tumors is to remove them, ”said Alexander Zavyalov, head of the neurosurgical department of the Veresaeva hospital.

The operation to remove the tumor lasted three and a half hours. The difficulty was that the resection of the formation in parts is not allowed, as it can lead to profuse and uncontrolled bleeding. And if even a small fragment of the tumor is not removed, a relapse may occur.

The operation was successful. The symptoms disturbing the patient disappeared, and he was discharged on the seventh day after surgery. The histological examination showed that the tumor was benign.

Recall that at the end of March, doctors from Balashikha removed 20 magnets from the stomach of a two-year-old child. And in early April, St. Petersburg doctors from the oncology center removed a soft tissue tumor weighing more than seven kilograms for a 43-year-old patient.
