More than half of the inhabitants of Germany opposed Ukraine's membership in NATO in the coming years. Tagesschau reports this with reference to the results of a public opinion poll conducted by the research institute Infratest dimap for the ARD TV channel.

1202 people took part in the survey, which took place from February 15 to 16. More than 53 percent of respondents did not approve of the country's entry into the alliance. Of these, 22 percent of those polled ruled out the possibility of membership entirely, and 31 percent said membership should not happen anytime soon.

At the same time, 28 percent of Germans supported the inclusion of Ukraine in the bloc. Another 19 percent of the respondents refused to answer the question.

In December 2021, according to a poll by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), almost 60 percent of Ukrainians supported the country's entry into NATO. In the event of a referendum on NATO membership, 59.2 percent of respondents would vote in favor, 28.1 percent would vote against.
