< p>More than a thousand Russian citizens are facing deportation from Latvia.
The Latvian Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs has calculated that 1,167 Russians are not have complied with the requirements of the amendments to the Immigration Act and have not applied for a residence permit in the country.
LETA writes about this.
First, Russians had to pass a test of knowledge of the national language and, by December 31, 2023, apply for a permit for a two-year stay in Latvia.
Everyone who did not do this will be forced to explain why they are not leaving the country. These explanations will be reviewed in February.
It is noted that 46 bearers of the traditions of the Russian world decided to act preventively and left on their own. The rest may now be forcibly evicted. The process of expelling Russians from the country will be difficult, but necessary, they believe in Latvia. They do not hope that citizens of a terrorist country will voluntarily comply with the laws of Latvia.
Recall that on January 4, employees of the Latvian Security Service arrested a Russian citizen who was monitoring military facilities and transmitting information to the FSB. The detention took place on December 20 last year, but the incident became public only now.
