The total number of Muslims who are performing Hajj this year is 1.8 million.
A heat wave caused the deaths of at least 550 Muslims who arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj, a traditional pilgrimage to the holy sites of Mecca and Medina. Among the dead: 323 believers from Egypt, 60 from Jordan, 35 Tunisian citizens and at least 6 Jordanian citizens. Indonesia, Iran and Senegal also reported the death of their citizens.

Hajj is the annual pilgrimage that millions of Muslims make to Mecca for religious rites. The Hajj, one of the largest public gatherings in the world, is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for able-bodied Muslims.
Stampedes, tent fires and other accidents have been reported to have caused hundreds of deaths during the Hajj to Saudi Arabia over the past 30 years.
A 2019 Geophysical Research Letters study said rising temperatures in Saudi Arabia due to climate change would put Hajj pilgrims at “extreme risk.”
