Russia and its agents of influence intend to spark protests in Moldova if a pro-Russian candidate does not win the presidential elections.
This is stated in a joint statement by the governments of the USA, Canada and Great Britain.
“While defending our shared democratic values, we warn our democratic partners and allies that Russian actors are preparing a scenario to influence the results of the presidential elections in Moldova in the fall,” the statement said.
The three governments noted that they are united in opposing Russia's aggression and subversion of democratic societies, and also oppose the Kremlin's ongoing attempts to use disinformation, criminal and covert activities and corruption to undermine sovereignty and democratic processes.
“The Kremlin relies on lies, deception, corruption and disinformation to undermine sovereignty and democracy. While democracy thrives on openness and truthfulness, authoritarianism and disinformation depend on secrecy and deception,” the document notes.
The statement emphasizes that Russia seeks to create in Moldova’s society a negative attitude towards the West, the current government and the country’s potential for joining the European Union. The Russian Federation is also trying to undermine the public’s faith in Moldova’s ability to protect its sovereignty and ensure the rule of law.
“We commend Moldova's leaders for continuing to skillfully address these threats, build resilience, and maintain peace and security, while advancing democratic reforms and rebuilding the country's economy,” the statement said. .
The document notes that Russia is now exacerbating social tensions in Moldova, for which it is actively using disinformation and propaganda to achieve its goals.
“If Russian interference in the Moldova elections proves unsuccessful, there is reason to believe that Moscow will work to incite protests,” the three governments warned.
The United States, Canada and Britain said they shared detailed information about Russian subversion with Moldovan authorities to help them thwart the Kremlin's plans.
“We will also continue to seek to bring to justice those involved in these schemes for the Kremlin’s covert financing of political activities in Moldova,” the three governments emphasized in a joint statement.
