The author, Ukrainian architect Slava Balbek, spoke about the details of the unique Channel 24 project. First of all, he noted that modular housing in Bucha is just a part of a large project for temporarily displaced persons RE: Ukraine.

Consequently, 2 pilot sections will be located in Bucha, in which up to 15 families will live for up to a year. The goal of the architect team is to explore their living, communication and socialization. According to Balbek, it will be necessary to understand how they use such an object and draw certain conclusions so that the project can expand.

At present, the main and urgent issue remains the financing of the project. A beautiful and green site for a modular town was provided to the architects by local deputies, there are many requests for assistance with materials and partially furnished. However, there is still no total investment, and to get it, you have to go a long way.

We, as an architectural workshop, do not have such experience, but, like everyone else, we find now new experiences, meanings and connections. For us, this is indeed a very important path, because everything in architecture is based on analysis. And the more accurate the information you have, the better the solution you can provide,” Slava Balbek shared.

How families will be selected for the project

The architect noted that now there are more than 13 million internally displaced persons in Ukraine, and therefore the demand for housing is huge. However, the situation is changing very rapidly. Those who needed a place to live find it and don't need it anymore.

Construction will take about 4 months. And the families that will live in the modular town in Bucha will be picked up closer to the time of launch – approximately in 3-4 weeks. Only in this way will it be possible to help those who really need it and are relevant.

It is important that most families will be local – from Bucha. It is necessary that people keep in touch with their plots and houses, which, unfortunately, are destroyed, communicate with neighbors, go to visit.

“It is important that the construction site be near the destroyed places – in order to leave connections between houses familiar to them, plots that they will rebuild with their own hands,” the architect shared.

However, families from other regions will still live in the town. So the project team will be able to see how these families will integrate into those that already lived here and formed as a small community.
